Brand
Born in 1919 in Russia, Mikhail Timofeecivh Kalashnikov has always been an engineering enthusiast. When he was just a boy, he worked as a mechanic in a tractor station and then as a rifle tester in a weapon factory, until he was drafted into the Red Army in 1938 as a tank crewman.
Injured in 1941, Mikhail Kalashnikov was put in convalescence, and he frequently heard soldiers complaining about reliability issues on their infantry weapons. He then created a new type of submachine gun, resulting in him being posted to a weapon design bureau. By 1947, his work resulted in the Avtomat Kalashnikova, abbreviated as AK. The “Kalashnikov” was born, and officially adopted by the Soviet Union in 1949.
A lot of models followed all praised for the same qualities: these guns are tough, reliable, easy to maintain and use, and most importantly, they are cheap. For these reasons, the AK became a favorite amongst guerilla fighters and countries in need of a simple but efficient assault rifle.
The Kalashnikov family is the biggest assault rifle group in the world, with more than 100 million units produced all over the globe, all variants combined.
